Caring
She groaned slightly as she pulled herself up, feeling the well-worn wood beneath her calloused skin. The familiar sound of rain sloshing against the well-house pounded in her ears.
She let out a bitter chuckle, empty eyes staring at the door. The rain would wash some of the blood off her body, alright. Giving a small sniff, trying to push back the tears threatening to resurface, she looked down on her blood-soaked form. A few tears slipped down her cheek to her lips as she stepped to the door.
The stench followed her as she slowly stepped out, her mind seemingly elsewhere. The rain mingled with the tears now steadily pouring down her cheeks, yet she didn't make a sound.
In a sudden movement, she dashed to her home, a desperate urge to rid herself of the blood, to scrub herself until her skin became raw, to shed her soiled clothing overcoming her. Blood was everywhere. Her hands, her face, her hair, her clothes....everywhere. She grasped the side, and tried to fling it open.
It didn't move.
She looked around desperately, the urge overcoming her. Her sapphire eyes caught onto a bright white sheet of paper fluttering in the slight wind, protected from the rain. She snatched it up, eyes hungrily searching for the answer, ignoring the way the sides she clutched turned wet and red.
'Kagome,
Otou-san, Sota, and I are leaving town for a while, we waited for you but had to leave. Please stay with Inuyasha, alright?
Love,
Okaa-san
She gave another bitter chuckle, similar to the one she let out in the well-house. Of course they would be gone, right when she needed them most. She reread the last line. 'I would if I could,' she thought bitterly.
"Kagome!"
She numbly turned, to see a familiar head of cropped black hair and a bright green umbrella rushing up the steps, towards her.
"Kagome!" the girl called out again, "I thought you and your family went on some sort of vacation, so why are you here--" she stopped abruptly, her dark eyes taking in Kagome's soaked, bloodstained form.
"Ka...gome?" she asked hesitantly as she reached her.
"You're right. Why am I here?" Kagome asked forlornly, a bittersweet smile on her face. 'Why am I....they're gone...and only they cared...'
"Kagome?" the girl whispered, her voice trembling.
Her blue eyes turned to the dry girl, as if actually seeing her for the first time.
"Yuka...," she struggled to place on a fake, cheerful smile, "You should leave. They...are gone...after all..."
The modern girl snapped to life, her eyes blazing. She stomped right up to Kagome, and swung out her hand. The sound of flesh meeting flesh filled the air.
"Kagome, whatever happened, snap out of it!" Yuka scolded, "Now get under this umbrella before you get sick and die or something! Come on, your family isn't here, so you're going to my house!"
Yuka grabbed her arm, and pulled her under the green umbrella, seemingly ignoring the blood coating her. She distantly wondered how she knew something was wrong...Yuka was never the best at noticing things.
"You're telling me all about it on the way, okay?" she muttered the usually nosy question in a comforting manner. As if she didn't want it for gossip, but for actually knowing. As if she cared.
Suprise filtered through her numb body. "You...care?" she whispered.
Yuka glared at her. "Of course I do! Why wouldn't I?!"
Sun burst through the clouds.
