Title: A Lesson In Pride
Pairing: Volkner/Ino
Summary: Upon reaching the Battle Frontier, Dawn and Ino are immediately challenged to a battle.
Disclaimer: I don't own Pokemon or Naruto.
Notes: Ignore the title, I couldn't think of anything else. Anyways. Ino IS from the Naruto world, but she doesn't remember anything about it. I'm not happy with this at all, but I figured that this pairing has such little support that crap is better then nothing. Oh, and all credit for conversion to this pairing goes to [livejournal.com profile] muchenthusiasm, a girl after my own heart.

Based on the scene in Platinum that occurs when you try to go to the Battle Tower.

A Lesson In Pride

"Hey, look!" Dawn piped up, sounding a bit more excited than she had been a moment ago. Ino wasn't sure, though-- Dawn's excitement levels had been unchartable ever since they had stepped off of the boat and onto the docks. She supposed it came from reaching the place she had dreamed of going to for years.

"What is it?" she asked, bemused. She followed Dawn's gaze over to the two trainers standing in front of the entrance leading to the Battle Tower. She didn't need a reminder as to who they were, but Dawn gave it anyways.

"It's Flint and Volkner! I wonder what they're doing here..." the younger girl trailed off thoughtfully. She looked up at Ino, head tilted.

"I wonder," Ino repeated, eyes trained on Volkner. Something was unbearably familiar about that lazy stance, something that had tugged at her ever since she had first seen him. She wondered, briefly, what it was that he reminded her of, then shook it off. No use dwelling on what she couldn't change. Besides, there were other interesting things about Volkner other then him reminding her of something.

"Hey!" Flint waved at them as they approached, apparently as hyped up as Dawn. Ino rolled her eyes. Dawn she could forgive for her childish cheerfulness, but Flint was a grown man and still acted so childlike. "Are you heading to the Battle Tower?"

Before Ino could say anything about how obvious the answer was, Dawn cut in. "Yes, we are!" She grinned at Ino, practically bouncing in her excitement.

"Thought so!" Flint pointed at them with all the flair and drama he could muster."Before you can go in, prove you're worthy with a battle!"

"...Didn't we already beat both of you?" Dawn asked, blinking. "What could doing it again prove?"

"She's right. I don't know why I let him drag me into this," Volkner muttered under his breath, speaking for the first time since the conversation had begun.

Ino caught his eye and grinned at him. "You know that you were just dying to see me again. You don't have to hide it."

He gave a longsuffering sigh, and her grin widened.

"Alright," she said, turning back towards Flint. "We accept your challenge."

"What?" Dawn blurted out, her eyes growing wide. "Why? We've already defeated them before!"

Ino shrugged. "Hey," she said, "a battle's a battle, and we haven't had one since we've stepped on that stupid boat. I'm dying to get my blood flowing." She loved battles-- it was the only time she felt like she was doing what she was meant to do. Sometimes, she wondered if she had been a trainer before she lost all her memories too.

Dawn slowly nodded. "Right. If that's what you want." She turned towards their two opponents, straightening up. Her face grew determined. "Let's do this."

The battle was exactly the kind Ino loved best. Challenging and exhilarating, where she had to think her way through their strategies and fight to win.

And win they did. She didn't expect anything less from herself or her Pokemon. Still, she couldn't help but laugh, eyes sparkling as Flint's last Pokemon fell. "Now that," she said, "was a battle."

"Told you it would be the same as before," Dawn added good-naturedly.

Flint stared in shock, absolutely speechless. His mouth moved, but no words came out. Privately, Ino thought that he looked a bit like a fish when he did that. Volkner tapped him a few times, then, when he didn't respond, shoved him.

Nothing.

He sighed, and glanced over at them. "I'll take this shell--" he gestured at Flint "--out of here. Have fun at the Tower."

"Will you be joining us?" Dawn piped up, eyes wide and deceptively innocent. Ino narrowed her eyes at her, not fooled by the act. That girl was planning something, she just knew it, and she was going to find out what it was just as soon as Volkner left.

Volkner paused, just for a moment, and looked over at Ino. She blinked, distracted from her thoughts by the sudden attention, and turned to look up at him.

"Yeah," he said, slowly, as their eyes met. "I think I will."

I know! It's so tragic. It's a really cool very obscure pairing. ; A;

Oh well. If it does become popular, we'll be like the pioneers of it.
